After a round 4 exit at the Ichinomiya Chiba Open QS 6000, Adam Melling jumped a flight home to hunt waves South of Lennox and to prepare for his sister's wedding. We caught up with Mello as he washed, dried and prepped his beloved Clubsport, the only choice of wedding vehicle for the Melling clan.
‘Japan was fun but I am really glad to be home. This has been the most time I have spent at home in years, we have had good waves from Easter to Winter pretty much. It has been epic just surfing and fishing’
Any stand outs around your area a the moment?
‘Mikey McDonagh has been ripping, we have been on a couple of trips down the coast escaping the crowds, James Wood has been surfing great as well and all of the local crew have been on it, although I wish Lennox wasn’t so user friendly sometimes to cull the crowds, but what can you do’
What’s the go with Missing At Sea?
‘Me and a mate have been putting some surfing and fishing clips together and we are just amped on being ocean lovers. We fish as much as possible and have been working on a bit of a show to go with it, it's a work in progress but it's fun’
We noticed you have been rocking the Fu Wax pretty hard lately, how did that happen?
‘I was a Sex Wax fanatic, fully loved the stuff, then a mate put me onto some Fu before I was about to wax a new board. I used the Fu Base Coast which is super hard, but once you get it on it makes the best base, it doesn't move. I then tried some Fu Warm as it is softer and clumps well and then finally a smidge of Cool over the top so my front foot can move around. I have tried the Tropic blend but it's almost too grippy for me, but with the little bit of softness from the Cool over the top I can still move my front foot, it's all about getting the balance right for your application’
Mate, that is a serious routine.
‘You guys down south probably don't need that much in terms of Base/Warm/Cool, you could get away with a Cold base then a Cool top coat’
Noted. What are the plans for the rest of the year?
‘Well I’m 32 and these are supposed to be the best years of your surfing life, you have a brain on ya, you haven't snapped yourself in half from surfing too much and working does not look like fun. I am going to chase down the QS 10,000 and give them a crack. Seeing some of the Europeans and people like Davey Cathels on the QS is inspiring, they surf so much and just get you amped as they are so hungry’
So a CT charge?
‘You take bad beatdowns when you get get bad results and then the time at home can be a real eye opener, so yeah, I am going to have a crack’
On that note, good luck with the wedding, kick some arse in the 10,000’s and hopefully see you back on the tour, go Mello!
