I love talking about surfing, I love reading about surfing, I love watching surfing, I love ‘doing’ surfing, but one thing I really love is listening to people talk about surfing.
I spend a fair amount of time on the road for Staple Season and as much as I enjoy the company of my dog Wally, I really long for some idle talk about the one thing that keeps me sane, surfing.
In the podcast/youtube/soundcloud world of today we have the goofy footed eternal grommet Mark Occhilupo, stumbling his way through conversations with guests who either completely get in the zone with Occ and psych out or fall into a bumbling mess and just get by. Either way, the Occ Cast is getting better with time and there are plenty of interesting characters who would love the one on one time with the Occ.
For the more ‘technical breakdown’ side of surfing, the Lipped Podcast is another cracker. Cahill Bell Warren and Jimmy Miles get stuck into the ins and outs of every CT event and most QS results. These guys analyze heats like some type of Fox Sports specialist show, they show great knowledge of surfers strengths and weaknesses and if you ever miss a CT event because you actually sleep at night, listen to Lipped to get you back in the loop.
Some other podcasts worthy of your brain space would be the Monday Mass with Chris Cote, The Dooley, Everything is Always Terrible with Rory Parker, Surf Splendour - Conversations about Surfing and The Wire by Firewire Surfboards.
The one podcast that resonates with me the most, the one podcast that feels as if it is the podcast for the people, the one podcast thats intro has some all time classic surf commentary and the one podcast with the unforgettable phrase ‘ shred heads, wax heads, kooks and barneys, welcome to AIN'T THAT SWELL The surfing radio show dedicated to cutting fucking sick, featuring Surfing World Magazine Editor, Vaughan Dead and Gold Cone Piece award winning surf journalist, Jed Smith is 100% worth your time. I have never met these blokes but I feel like I have known them my whole life after spending so much time listening to them ramble on about the surf world we all live in, this post is a full promo to Ain't That Swell.
The format has grown from episode to episode, the back end of 2015 being the real start up for me and this year has been a rip snorter as well. Jed and Vaughan have managed to keep consistent banter together and also have had some seriously honest insights into people like Trough Man, Alex The Kid, President Duterte, every CT surfer male and female, old mate who duck dives in front of ya as you are driving down the line and also some serious shit like parents not being there for you when you are a young which in turn creates a competitive beast, heavy!
The conversations had on Ain't That Swell sound normal, they sound as if you are in the room with them, slightly stoned sitting in the corner sipping on a tin wondering whether to say something or not, you don't say anything, you just listen to the natural wave of people talking and engaging. The occasional addition of Danny Johnson and Rob Bain have made for some great comical relief but have also added a different analytical insight to tour and local surf scenes. The ebb and flow of Jed and Vaughn is all time, super relaxed at one moment and then fucking full blown the next.
If you like a bit of banter, a fair amount of swearing, serious analysis of CT surfing and a general scope of the surfing world then jump right the latest episode of Ain't That Swell, don’t judge or try and figure it out, just sit quietly in the corner of the room and listen in you stoned finger bun.
UP THE SWELLIANS !!!!!!
