I watch, read, like, unlike, listen, follow and consume surf media from the mainstream to the fringes, I love it all.
Wednesday 16th of March 2017 I had invoices, emails and some boring shit to take care of for Staple Season. To help me through the monotonous mountain of paperwork I had Ron Dog, Pete Mel, Joe Turpel, Pottz, Kaipo and Raspberry nattering away through my computer speakers about the ‘action’ from an ok day at the super bank. Little do the WSL team know, but their continuous drawl can make an office day go by quite easily.
There is big value in adding Head Judge Richie Porta and Special Comments Barton Lynch into the mix with their wealth of knowledge from both sides of the fence but apart from that I am looking forward to a year of the same commentary team. Adding Rosy back in would be nice as Rosy is more eloquent than Kaipo, but….we aren’t sure what is going on there yet.
Don't throw in any surprise commentators for Brazil or parts of the Euro leg though please WSL, keep the Snapper team together and keep the voices familiar. The only exception to this would be to go old school and have Occy commentating the Bong events, Dave Wassel and Chris Cote for Fiji/Pipe and Sal at Trestles. I used to love the event sponsor commentator as it was a refreshing injection into the booth.
Red Bull had an interesting broadcast early this year when they had one static camera on pumping pipe, one action camera from the beach and Chris Cote just rambling away in the hot seat. Chris would talk to surfers who had just surfed down the road at Sunset and were preparing for pipe, he would call his friends and dial them into some interesting conversation on all things surfing, he would even stop surfers who were coming out of a heavy session and ask them about who was charging and what the conditions were like. Now this format was perfect for a venue like pipe, but I wonder if some of that relaxed, more natural conversation would add too more fan engagement with the commentators VS the current set up ?
Facebook are a 'player' in the WSL now, but in what sense? Yes they are streaming events live, maybe they will try the whole VR/360 angles again, but are they going to have an input in our already over scrutinized sport? Are they going to offer up their own commentary team? Would you or I be able to make the calls from the comfort of our own home, office, car park, pub and be able to fully call ‘BULLSHIT’ on that ridiculous over score X surfers repetitive back hand lip taps?
I'm sorry, I’m getting off track here. Stoked to see Owen back where he belongs, so stoked to see Steph Gilmore in yellow, lets hope the West and the mighty Vic turn it on for some heavy action, oh and keep the team together please WSL.
